Reflection Statement:
This body of work was mostly figurative when possible, and inspired by my BFA work when applicable. My intent was to create vibrational drawings and three-dimensional pieces that had a vibrational quality and felt fleeting. A lot of them were created quickly in a short amount of time. I created most of the work with oil paint and charcoal because of their ability to communicate effectively with minimal mark making. Through these works, I learned just how much I like painting quick figurative gestures, and how those allow me to explore larger ideas. I've also come to realize that I'd like to experiment more. Given more time, low stakes and small scale projects like these can be enjoyable and helpful for future work.
TRANSFORMATION DRAWINGS
Transformation #1
For the first transformation I used a dry pigment stick that could also be water activated. I felt the most drawn to the warm burnt orangey color because it reminded me of the colors I typically use to prime canvas when I paint with oil. I used the stick dry and wet which resulted in different textures across the surface. I also used a brush to spread the wash around.

Transformation #2
For this next transformation I wanted to cover up the harsh marks I made with the pigment stick. I decided to use a piece of white chalk to had more texture and a lighter value to the drawing.

Transformation #3
For this transformation, I was unsure of my next move and so I drew figures because that is what I'm most interested in. I used self portraits as a reference and drew the figures in charcoal. I was hesitant to overlap them but I am satisfied with the result. The pale mustardy hue in the background allows for the charcoal drawings to stand out.

Transformation #4
For this 4th transformation, I was really at a loss for what to do. I was really attached to my gesture drawings and didn't want to cover them up. I considered and started to paint new gestures with oil paint in muted purples, but I didn't like how the paint sat on the surface of the paper. I was joking around with the drawing and decided to wrap it over my head like a scarf. The paper is pretty sturdy and so I had to make a strong effort to mold it to the shape of my head, neck, and shoulders. It has held its shape and feels like its own entity now. Because of time, and my satisfaction with this transformation, I didn't complete the last ones.
