Found Objects Sculpture
A sketch of what the sculpture would look like
For this assignment I lacked both of the objects needed to realize my sculpture. The sculpture would have been created with a sex toy and a plastic rosary with transparent beads. The rosary would have been wrapped around the sex toy as if it was constricting it. This work is commenting on how Catholicism demonizes sex and sexuality outside of marriage. Some with even more strict catholic beliefs, believe that sexual expression should only occur with the intention of procreation. Although sex toys are used by all sorts of people in different kinds of relationships, they are often used by single individuals. The rosary, a catholic and religious symbol would symbolize the limiting of full sexual expression. It represents the policing and suppression of a full human experience.
The sex toy would specifically not resemble male genitalia, so that it contains no reference to reproduction, and only represents pleasure. Both objects are hard and rigid but the way that the toy stands firm shows groundedness and lack of resistance. Catholic devotion, or religious devotion in general can coexist with a full range of unique sexual expression. The rosary is the object creating friction, not the toy. The hard nature of the rosary beads represents rigidity in limiting beliefs. The plastic material the beads are made from would represent the superficiality of these beliefs, and the transparency would suggest emptiness and hypocrisy. The beads reflect that what the church preaches is contradicted by these rules and ideals they have in place. Catholicism preaches love and acceptance but then has a firm stance on what expressions and behaviors are not allowed.
