SCULPTURE ASSIGNMENT #1 - WOOD SCULPTURE
I really appreciated the grain in the piece of wood I chose to use, and decided to leave it untreated. I cut, sanded, and arranged the pieces of wood in a way that allowed the grain lines to flow in a continuous way. I also thought It was important to leave my pen marks on the pieces of wood to reflect my thought process and the way I attempted to organize the structure. Because I cut many of the wood ends into angles, I experimented with fitting them to the previous piece of wood in different ways to see what configuration provided the most balance. I wanted the sculpture to convey a sense of movement as well as pressure. The sculpture manages to hold itself up, but it relies on very small areas for support. The wood contorts in a single direction in order to counteract gravity.
