GREGOR'S ROOM

Bruised, copy paper, water. chalk pastel, ink, 6 x 18 inches

This interpretation of Gregor’s Room from the short story Metamorphosis by Kafka draws inspiration from the physical discomfort Gregor experiences through his transition. Different shades of purple and blue were used to reference the bruising Gregor endured. The process of creating paper pulp was integral to this sculpture. The texture the dried paper pulp creates symbolizes the rough nature of Gregor's experience. The brown spot Gregor leaves on the carpet beneath the couch was a distinct piece of imagery that was recreated in the sculpture. The quilt on his bed was also disheveled and folded back in the story as well as the sculpture.
