CLAY BUST SCULPTURES

Matte and Shiny, air dry clay, wood, mail polish, acrylic paint, 12 x 14 inches

The social issue being commented on is the lack of representation in the media, as well as the lack of transparency in the editing of images of bodies online. The two clay figures are of a black little girl and a white woman, specifically a model. Both of the figures interact with each other, thus they sit on the same wooden base. The little girl is looking up at the woman, idolizing her and wondering why she doesn't look the same. She is sitting at the bottom of the base pinching her tummy fat, while the woman is sitting tall on a pedestal. The base the woman is sitting on top of was carved to resemble an exaggerated hourglass figure. The bust of the little girl was created to be round and soft to juxtapose the harshness and forced posture of the model. The little girl is black and is painted in color and her hair is natural and coiled and also painted in various colors. the woman is painted a matte white. The glossiness of the little girl and flat finish of the model were intended to symbolize the authenticity of the the little girl's image versus the performative and specially curated one of the woman.
