Dinner and a Movie
A few of the central themes of the film La La Land are romance and identity. The film shows that just because a relationship does not last, doesn't mean it wasn't successful. This piece illustrates that disruption in the relationship, as well as the resolutions for both characters after they part ways. A piano was used as a back drop or place setting to reference the jazz music in which the story was told through in the film. Music was integral to the film and to the characters themselves and this is where they found common ground. Crystal glasses and a plate were specifically used to symbolize the characters reflections in each other. They were like mirrors for one another. The crystal also represents facades, which is another theme in the film. the four spoons divide the plate into quadrants to represent the four seasons in which the story was told. Starting in the first quadrant, the rose is whole and then gradually looses more petals throughout the quadrants. The rose petals also become more shriveled as they progress. There is a knife cutting through the spoon divisions to illustrate a disruption in the relationship. The couple unfortunately breaks up and the rose petals diverge into two separate directions. This is emphasized by the two crystal glasses on either side of the plate. Although they did not end up together, both character's stories were resolved. The crystal glasses also symbolize achievement as both characters realized their dreams once they moved on from each other.
